My Research process & Why i chose this topic
Before being prompted to write a research paper, I have always loved mysteries and secrecy surrounding powerful elites and wealthy individuals. The idea that there are people in the shadows making powerful moves and grabs, almost like an intense game of "Risk," is thrilling and exciting to me. It's almost like something out of a James Bond movie or "Mission Impossible."
In addition to that, I also take programming classes under the supervision of one of the country's greatest programmers: Mrs. Roszko. My mentor constantly prides herself how her students end up in massive intelligence-security jobs like the FBI, NSA, Wiki-leaks, or InfoSec. To keep my wits sharp, she constantly asks for my thoughts and input on current leaks and data-breaches. She always ask for my two cents, from Russia's "Trolling Machine" to an accidental usage of Mirai, a piece of malware that infects other "Internet of Things" devices and brought down many service providers. Discussing these attacks and leaks are always fun.

After a failed attempt to use the "Trolling Machine" as a topic, I had to dig deeper. I wanted something to do with security. I searched around, and I found the Paradise Papers being published by multiple European news networks. After reading the first paragraph of the "International Consortium for Investigative Journalist's," "Lewis Hamilton," I was sold! I wanted this to be my topic. So, I made my research question a lot more to do with an actual banking industry being affected, instead of how the papers will affect these powerful individuals. I chose the U.K. and their industry mostly because the law firm, Appleby, is under investigation by the U.K. and the rest of the EU. Before I even started doing my research, I had everything right in front of me. 13.4 million documents is a lot to go through. In addition to that, journalists, news networks, and economists were blasting information everywhere, so it was extremely easy to get my hands on information. I had primary source: the "ICIJ." I also had other sources like the "British Broadcasting Corporation" and "The Atlantic." With everything in front of me, I refined my research question into a precise thesis, how the whole world is going to be affected by these tax exploits and loop holes.
Currently, the European Parliament Committee is wrapping up their investigation of the 13.4 million documents. They have already made a blacklist of countries who are under investigation, and will take action to fix these mistakes. Other organizations are creating their own blacklists and sending them to governments around the world. Soon, all of this will be in the past, and we can have a brighter future without offshore secrecy.
